More info about the piglets

The latest animal additions to Tangled Roots Farm are our four feeder piglets.  We have selected about five acres of land that we will be slowly converting from a young pine forest to open pasture and gardens.  We chose heritage breed pigs for several reasons: their rooting instincts, their ability to thrive on a forage-based diet, and for delicious pork this fall.  Our piglets are Yorkshire/Duroc crosses – although ours are all pink, many of their littermates were deep red like Durocs.  We will be rotating them through the area about a quarter of an acre at a time and supplementing their diet with organic grain and some restaurant scraps from my part-time job.  They are very skittish (this could have something to do with Penny the farm-dog trying to herd them from outside the fence) but we are trying to spend enough time with them so that they are a little friendlier as they grow up!
